LikeDislikeColleges admit you based on your grades (GPA), difficulty of highschool courses taken (AP?), standardized test scores (ACT, SAT), extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and work experience.
Volunteer work is very important – yes. I worked at an animal adoption agency for a year and a half in highschool. It was for 4-6 hours once a week and I basically just got to play with puppies the entire time. It was a blast! I’d highly reccomend something like that =)
If you can keep your GPA >3.5 and your ACT >24, plus a few extracurriculars and some volunteer work, you have a pretty good shot at getting into most state universities.
The college is looking for students who will be involved. That you have done volunteer work shows them you are willing to get out there and help make your campus and university a better place.

LikeDislikeDo any volunteer work you find interesting. Don’t just do what everyone else does.
In my experience when I applied to colleges, I don’t remember having to send in my high school resume. But, I did have to make the resume to get teachers to write recommendations for me.
I think if you start on volunteer work now and stay with it for a long time it looks better to the teachers writing the recommendations. If your high school has some type of volunteer club (we had Key Club), do that too. It gives you different opportunities.

LikeDislikeWhat are you graduating in? Depending on what you’re doing, sometimes volunteer work doesn’t mean much. Unless you are doing work that is in your field and will help you, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Keep up your grades and graduate.

LikeDislikeVolunteering was mandatory for graduation at my high school. I believe it contributed to my acceptance into the universities I applied to. It’s also nice to give back to the community in some way.
I did 150+ hours of volunteering at Akron City Hospital (would have preferred to work with animals, but that wasn’t allowed).

LikeDislikeVolunteering is one aspect that colleges look at in applicants. Here is the secret…do volunteerism to demonstrate how you give back to the community. If you put in a few hours at a thrift store, then your committment is probably very little. This may translate back to the college as that you are not serious about giving back. On the other hand, if you set up a process for people to donate used computers to you and you repair them and donate to needy families, then that would demonstrate you committment to help needy families in your area.
I am a school counselor and have worked with hundreds of students and parents. The same questions about how to find the right college or plan for college keep coming up. I decided to set up some online classes (self paced) to answer many of your questions and activities to help in the process. My site is located at globalscholar.com and type in my name “Kerrie.”
