Firstly you need to format the USB drive into NTFS file system
I used “HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool” - HPFLASH1.exe , included in my tools pack.

Next you need to make the NTFS USB stick bootable
I used “HP Drive Key Boot Utility” - cp006049.exe , included in my tools pack

Now we need to shutdown and disconnect our current hard drive(s)

Then it’s a case of a powering up and booting from a Window 98 CD-ROM, startup into DOS with CD-ROM support.

Now we can reconfigure the master boot record of the USB stick, we do this by..
Type: Fdisk (Just to ensure the USB drive is readable and showing up as a fixed disk, once this is confirmed)
Type: Fdisk /mbr

Another reboot and swap the Windows 98 CD-ROM for our modified Windows XP Startup CD.

Now it’s a case of waiting an absolute age for Windows to install. Note: patience is really needed here.

Making a modified Windows XP startup CD.
